CHI-ATL total moves 50.5 to 53.5 as Williams' status stays unsettled

The total rose 3.0 points. Our margin on Atlanta, 1.38 against a posted 1.5, is the number we publish, and the matchup model has not beaten the spread.

What changed

The total moved from 50.5 to 53.5, a change of 3.0 points. That is the trigger for this entry. The total is a different market from the side. Our published number is a margin, so what follows covers the spread gap and the matchup read, and we make no claim about why the total moved.

The wire around Chicago changed over the same stretch. ESPN NFL reports that Bears quarterback Caleb Williams does not know if he is playing yet and says he had a "serious" tear. ProFootballTalk reports he had another full practice Thursday. These are reports, not confirmed facts, and they point in different directions.

The number

We project Atlanta by 1.38. The market has Atlanta at 1.5 on the posted line, which the facts express as a market margin of -1.5. That leaves a disagreement of 2.88 points.

This is a gap between two numbers, not a recommendation. Our power ratings put Atlanta at #13 (0.12) and Chicago at #11 (0.84). By rating alone, Chicago is the higher-ranked team, so our margin on Atlanta comes from the full matchup picture and home field, not from a ratings edge.

Where the game separates

Two of the three largest phases favor Chicago.

Pressure is the biggest gap, at -2.064 standard deviations toward Chicago. The Bears defense ranks #1 against a Falcons offense that ranks #25 in this phase. In the other direction, Chicago's offense ranks #18 against Atlanta's defense at #23.

Third down is -1.617 standard deviations toward Chicago. The Bears defense ranks #3 and the Falcons offense ranks #19. Atlanta's defense is #16 against a Chicago offense at #12.

Inside the 20 is the one phase that favors Atlanta, at 1.576 standard deviations. The Falcons offense ranks #6 in red-zone touchdown rate against a Chicago defense at #15. Chicago's offense ranks #32 here, against Atlanta's defense at #16.

This is description, not prediction. The matchup model's record is 50.9% against the spread over 1184 games, and its most-confident quartile is at 47.3%. Our own verdict is that it does not beat the spread, and that its most confident quartile is its worst. We read these phases as a map of the game, not as a case for either side covering.

On the wire

- ESPN NFL reports Williams' "serious" tear and that he is unsure of his status. No phase is tagged to this item. - ProFootballTalk reports another full Thursday practice for Williams. This touches the dropback passing phase (epa_dropback). - ESPN NFL has a Bears backfield piece in its Buzz column. No phase is tagged. - CBS NFL's stock report says the Bears await Williams' return. No phase is tagged. - ProFootballTalk reports the Ravens-Falcons game without Lamar Jackson averaged 17 million viewers. This has no bearing on the matchup.

The Williams reports matter most because they bear on how Chicago moves the ball, which is what a total prices.

What would change our mind

We will write again if any of these happen:

- The line moves 1.0 point, or crosses 3 or 7. - The total moves another 1.5. - Gating injury news arrives, most obviously a definitive word on Williams. - Our own rating for either team moves 1.0 after the week's games.

Otherwise this entry stands. 21+ where legal.

Line moveWed 3:29 PM ET

Line shortens from +2.5 to +1.5; our gap to the market narrows to 2.88 points

What changed

The Falcons line moved from +2.5 to +1.5, a change of -1.0. That is a full point of the distance between our number and the market's. Our gap to the posted line went from 3.88 to 2.88, a change of -1.0. The market moved toward our side of the game, and our own projection is not what shrank the gap.

The total moved as well, from 49.5 to 50.5, a change of +1.0. That is short of the 1.5 total move we treat as a trigger on its own.

The number

We project Atlanta by 1.38. The market's implied margin is -1.5, with the Falcons posted at +1.5 and the total at 50.5. The difference between the two is 2.88 points.

That is a statement about where two numbers sit, not a recommendation. Our power ratings have Atlanta at #13 (0.12) and Chicago at #11 (0.84). A rating gap that small is consistent with a game the market sees as close to a pick'em.

Where the game separates

The matchup phases describe the game. They do not predict a cover, and we are careful about the distinction. The model behind them has not beaten the spread: it sits at 50.9% against the number over a sample of 1184 games, and its most confident quartile is at 47.3%. We therefore treat the phase read as context for the number above rather than as a signal. Next we are testing whether the same phases separate more cleanly in totals than in sides.

- Pressure (Pass rush vs protection): the widest separation, at -2.064 standard deviations in Chicago's favor. Atlanta's offense ranks #25 against a Chicago defense ranked #1. - Third down: -1.617 standard deviations, also Chicago's way. Atlanta's offense is #19 against a Chicago defense at #3. - Inside the 20 (Red-zone TD rate): the one phase that favors Atlanta, at 1.576 standard deviations. The Falcons' offense is #6 against a Chicago defense at #15. Chicago's offense ranks #32 in this phase.

Two phases lean Chicago and one leans Atlanta. We publish that as description only.

On the wire

The quarterback news touches the dropback phase for both teams.

- Yahoo NFL reports that Bears QB Caleb Williams is on track to play following his return to practice. - ProFootballTalk reports that Williams will be listed as a full practice participant Wednesday. - ProFootballTalk reports that the Falcons expect Michael Penix to practice Wednesday. - CBS NFL reports that Penix is likely to start this week against the Bears, but that his status could change.

The last item matters most. These are reports, not confirmations, and the Penix status is the one that could still move the game.

Separately, CBS NFL reports that Bears pass rusher Montez Sweat has been suspended for violating the league's performance-enhancing substances policy. Our tagger does not map that item to a phase, so we have not folded it into the separation figures above.

What would change our mind

We will write again if any of these happens:

- The line moves another 1.0 point, or crosses 3 or 7. - The total moves 1.5 from the current 50.5. - Gating injury news arrives, most likely a change in Penix's status. - Our own rating for either team moves 1.0 after the week's games.

Absent those, the current entry stands: our number is Atlanta by 1.38, against a market at +1.5. 21+ where legal.

Line crosses 3 to +2.5; our number drops to +1.38, gap to market now 3.88

What changed

The line crossed 3, moving from +3.5 to +2.5, a change of -1.0. The total moved from 48.5 to 49.5. Our own number moved more than the market did. It went from +5.29 to +1.38, a change of -3.91. Our gap to the market went from 8.79 to 3.88, a change of -4.91.

The market came toward us on the spread, and our number came toward the market by a larger amount. The facts do not say which input drove our move, so we won't attribute it to any one item.

The number

We project +1.38 for this game. The market's projected margin is -2.5 at the posted line of 2.5. The gap is 3.88 points, with our side being ATL. The posted total is 49.5.

On power ratings, ATL is #13 at 0.12 and CHI is #11 at 0.84. Our ratings span 7.6 from top to bottom. The market's span 11.5.

This is a published number and where it differs from the market. It is not a recommendation.

Where the game separates

Pressure is the largest separation, at -2.064 standard deviations in CHI's favor. ATL's offense ranks #25 in this phase and CHI's defense ranks #1. In the other direction, CHI's offense ranks #18 and ATL's defense ranks #23.

Third down separates by -1.617 standard deviations, again toward CHI. ATL's offense ranks #19 against a CHI defense ranked #3. CHI's offense ranks #12 and ATL's defense ranks #16.

Inside the 20 is the one phase that leans ATL, at 1.576 standard deviations. ATL's offense ranks #6 in red-zone TD rate against a CHI defense ranked #15. CHI's offense ranks #32, and ATL's defense ranks #16.

These phases describe the matchup. They are not a prediction of who covers. Across 1184 games, the matchup model has gone 50.9% against the spread. Its most confident quartile has gone 47.3%. We treat the phase view as context for the number, not as a reason to trust it more.

On the wire

Both items below touch the pass-rush phase, which is the game's largest separation.

- ProFootballTalk reports the Bears activated DE Shemar Turner from the PUP list. - ProFootballTalk reports Bears DE Montez Sweat was suspended two games for a performance-enhancing substance violation. CBS NFL and Yahoo NFL carry the same report.

These are wire reports. We have not confirmed them independently.

What would change our mind

We will write again if any of these happen:

- The line moves 1.0 point, or crosses 3 or 7. - The total moves 1.5. - There is gating injury news. That means anything further on the CHI pass rush, or news that changes ATL's protection. - Our own rating for either team moves 1.0 after the week's games.

Until then, the number is +1.38 against a market at -2.5. 21+ where legal.

Opening noteMon 11:18 AM ET

CHI at ATL: our number has the Falcons by 5.29; the market's margin is -3.5

The number

Our engine projects the Falcons to win by 5.29 at home against the Bears. The market's projected margin is -3.5, which matches a posted line of 3.5 with Atlanta as the home underdog. That puts us 8.79 points off the market, on the ATL side. The posted total is 48.5.

Some context on the size of that gap: our ratings run tighter than the market's. Our rating span is 7.6, against the market's 11.5, so we separate teams less than the market does. Our power table has the Bears at #11 (0.84) and the Falcons at #13 (0.12). The two teams are close, with Chicago ahead.

Where the game separates

These are the three phases with the widest separation. Two of them lean Chicago.

Pressure. Pass rush vs protection is the largest separation in this game, at -2.067 standard deviations, advantage CHI. Atlanta's offense ranks #25 in this phase and Chicago's defense ranks #1. The other way, Chicago's offense is #18 against an Atlanta defense at #23.

Third down. Third-down rate separates at -1.612 standard deviations, advantage CHI. The Falcons' offense ranks #19 against a Bears defense at #3. Chicago's offense is #12 and Atlanta's defense is #16.

Inside the 20. Red-zone TD rate is the one top phase that leans Atlanta, at 1.552 standard deviations. The Falcons' offense ranks #6 against a Bears defense at #15. Chicago's red-zone offense ranks #32 against an Atlanta defense at #17.

Read these as description, not prediction. Our number sits on Atlanta while the two widest phases favor Chicago. We don't treat that as a tension to resolve in either direction, and the matchup model's own record is why. Over a sample of 1184, it has gone 50.9% against the spread, and its top quartile has hit 47.3%. Our verdict on it is plain: it does not beat the spread, and the quartile it is most confident about is its worst. The phases describe what the game looks like. They do not tell you who covers.

On the wire

CBS NFL reports that Michael Penix Jr. hurt his ribs late in regulation of the Falcons' Sunday night loss to the Ravens, and that Penix says he will be ready for this week's game. ProFootballTalk carries Penix saying he could have stayed in if Atlanta had gotten the ball first in overtime.

Both items touch dropback efficiency, which is Atlanta's passing game. That phase isn't among the three above, but it sits right next to the protection matchup, where Chicago has its widest separation. These are reports, and we haven't confirmed his status. A change in that status is exactly the kind of news that would gate this number.

No other wire item this week touches a phase.

What would change our mind

We will write again on this game if any of the following happens:

- The line moves 1.0 point, or crosses 3 or 7. - The total moves 1.5 from 48.5. - Gating injury news arrives, most directly any change in Penix's reported status for Sunday. - Our own rating on either team moves 1.0 after this week's games.

Until one of those fires, this entry stands as our number and where it sits against the market's. It is not a recommendation. 21+ where legal.

This thread updates when the line moves a point or crosses 3 or 7, when the total moves 1.5, when gating injury news lands, or when our own rating moves after the week's games. All matchups.
