Rest and travel don't beat the price: hypothesis fails at n=3,242

A 3,242-bet grade of the rest/travel angle comes back 1085-2157 at -6.0% ROI, p=0.2839 — no edge. Here's what we run next.

Rest and travel is the most portable situational story in sports betting. It travels across leagues, it survives rule changes, and it sounds right: tired legs, red-eye flights, third game in four nights. We tested it. It does not clear the price.

What we found

The hypothesis — that rested teams beat their number often enough to pay — graded NOT_SUPPORTED across 3,242 bets spanning 163 distinct events. The record is 1085-2157. ROI came in at -6.0%.

The sharper read is in the win-rate gap. The market implied a 35.6% win rate on these bets. They actually won 33.5%. That is a 2.1-point shortfall against the price — directionally wrong, and the raw p-value of 0.2839 says even that shortfall is indistinguishable from noise at this sample. There is no rest edge here, and there is also no reliable inverse to fade. The angle is simply priced.

What this rules out matters: at n=3,242, a rest/travel effect large enough to overcome the vig would have shown up. It didn't. The realistic next step isn't to re-run the same test — it's schedule enrichment, giving the model actual travel distance, time-zone crossings and days-of-rest deltas rather than the coarse flags this grade ran on. A signal that fails on thin inputs has not been tested; it has been approximated.

The trends

While that test came back empty, four directional reads on the 8-game 2026-08-22 board are doing real work:

Concentrated money is landing pregame. The top campaign is $155,307 on 010CLECOL CLE ML at 96% one-sided. Behind it, $119,669 on 010CINAZ CIN ML at 92% one-sided and $95,618 on 010MINSD MIN ML at 96% one-sided. Total tracked whale money on the day: $539,709 across 5 campaigns — and notably, the biggest single ticket on the board today is $14,560. That is aggregation, not one wallet.

One arm is trending the wrong way. Gabriel Hughes (COL) carries an 8.96 ERA over his last 5, 13.05 over his last 3, against a season mark of 6.69. The recent windows are worse than the season — the direction is deteriorating, not mean-reverting.

Totals skew over, unanimously. 8 of 8 flagged total edges point over, led by CLE @ COL at model fair 14.64 vs a 10.5 line — a +4.14 run gap, the biggest total edge on the board. Unanimity like that is as much a flag on our own model as a read on the market, and we treat it that way.

The other end of the rotation is trending the opposite way. Ryan Weathers (NYY, TOR @ NYY) sits at a 0.89 ERA over his last 5 with 7.4 K/9 — the hottest arm we have flagged today.

The proven-signal book is holding out-of-sample. VELO_DROP is at 14.3% ROI over 124 graded bets; TRAILING_LATE at 11.6% ROI over 165 graded bets. Both are mechanism-driven — a measurable physical change, a specific game state — not situational narrative.

What it means

The contrast is the finding. The signals that hold are the ones with a causal mechanism you can observe in the data: velocity falling off a pitcher's fastball, a team's price in a specific late-game deficit. The one that failed is the one built on a story about how teams *should* feel. Markets price stories efficiently. They price measurements more slowly.

So rest and travel goes back into the queue behind schedule enrichment — real travel legs, real time zones, real rest deltas — and gets re-graded when the inputs are worth the test. Until then it is not in the book.

What would change our mind: a re-grade on enriched schedule data showing an actual win rate above the 35.6% market-implied line at comparable sample.
